Wayne Rooney, a legend of Manchester United, has identified defender Lisandro Martinez as the Red Devils player most likely to win the World Cup.

Martinez was included on Lionel Scaloni’s World Cup roster, with the expectation that he will be a mainstay in the back line.

In Argentina’s recent friendly against the United Arab Emirates, Martinez played the full 90 minutes as the Albiceleste cruised to a 5-0 victory.

Rooney wrote for the Times’s column, “For me, Argentina are the favourites. Unlike in 2018, they have plenty of good, solid players around Lionel Messi. Winning the Copa America last year will have given them confidence and has taken a bit of pressure off them.”

“I really like Lisandro Martínez. Watching him for Manchester United recently, he is really composed and aggressive. He is perfect for international football and will be a big player for them.”

Rooney used his column to praise Messi, whom he named the greatest player of all time, surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo and Diego Maradona.

In terms of what makes Messi better, Rooney stated, “He has everything — the way he controls games, his dribbling, his assists — whereas Ronaldo is more of a goalscorer.”

Despite believing Messi is a better player, Rooney believes Ronaldo will compete for the World Cup Golden Boot alongside his Argentine adversary.

According to the Englishman, the other World Cup favorites are Brazil, France, and Germany. He attributed Brazil’s chances to their formidable forward line, which includes Neymar, Vinicius Jr, and Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus.

He dismissed suggestions that France would lose because of the absences of Paul Pogba and Ngolo Kante. He encouraged Real Madrid combo Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga to recapture the magic that Pogba and Kante once brought to the table.

United’s all-time leading scorer believes Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford can help England’s chances in Qatar.

When asked about the difference between Maguire’s performances for England and for United, the 37-year-old noted that the defender is securely protected by a defensive midfielder when playing for the Three Lions, which was lacking at Old Trafford before to Casemiro’s arrival.
