Ronaldo sends message to Lionel Messi after Argentina’s dramatic penalty shootout win against France

Ronaldo has praised Lionel Messi for finally winning the FIFA World Cup after Argentina’s thrilling penalty shootout victory over France.

Messi, competing in his fifth World Cup, appeared to be on his way to winning the sport’s most prestigious international competition when Argentina took a two-goal lead before halftime. However, two Kylian Mbappe goals in as many minutes forced extra time.

Messi scored his second goal of the match to put Argentina back in the lead, but Mbappe equalized from the penalty spot to force penalties. Despite Mbappe’s best efforts, France lost the penalty shootout, handing Messi the championship.

Ronaldo believes that the rivalry between Brazil and Argentina is irrelevant when it comes to Messi, and he heaped admiration on the 35-year-old following his most recent victory.

“This guy’s football throws any rivalry to the corner. I saw a lot of Brazilians – and people from all over the world – rooting for Messi in this electrifying final,” Ronaldo wrote on Twitter.

“A farewell worthy of the genius who, far beyond being a World Cup star, captained an era.

“Congratulations Messi!”

Messi saved his best World Cup performance for last, scoring seven goals, including two in the championship game.

This is more than he scored in his previous four World Cups combined; he concludes his career with 13 goals in five World Cups.

He now trails Ronaldo, who scored 15 goals in 19 World Cup games and won the tournament in 2002, by two goals.

He was also a member of the 1994 squad that won in the United States, but he did not participate.

Messi has won everything at the club level, the Copa America and the World Cup within 18 months, and he was elected the best player in Qatar for his exceptional performance.
