Ronaldo may have to wear two different shirt numbers at Man United this season
There are just a few football players in the history of the beautiful game who go together with the number 7 on the back of their shirt, just like Cristiano Ronaldo.
But Manchester United’s latest signing may be helpless to wear the number enrobed by legendary players like George Best and David Beckham in the past, as striker Edison Cavani currently holds it.
The Uruguayan’s debut at Molineux this afternoon means that unless the Premier League grants a special, never-seen-before exemption for a change, Ronaldo will have to settle for another number in the Premier League this term.
However, the Portuguese superstar could take the number in the Champions League, as squad lists and numbers are yet to be finalized.
This unusual sets of events, where a player wears different shirt numbers in domestic and European competitions, has occurred before, with former United player Henrik Mkhitaryan wearing the numbers 7 and 77 whilst at Arsenal.

It’s also occurred at Old Trafford, with former Premier and Champions League winner Wes Brown wearing the numbers 30 and 24 during the legendary ‘Treble’ season of 1998/1999.
The only other way Ronaldo could reclaim the number 7 shirt is if Cavani chooses to depart Old Trafford before the transfer window shuts on Tuesday.
The striker’s agent and brother has been quick to stress that he has no intentions to leave the club, with South American football journalist Andrea Hernan fixed that Cavani wants to see out the final year of his deal in Manchester.
Whatever number he chooses to wear, the prospect of Ronaldo back in United colours in the next month or so is mouth-watering enough.
But for old times’ sake, let’s hope he gets that number 7 back.
