Romelu Lukaku sends one-word message after Chelsea overcame Southampton on penalties
When Romelu Lukaku was seen limping off the field during Chelsea’s 4-0 win over Malmo in the Champions League, there were serious concerns.
However, it appears that those concerns were unfounded. Chelsea defeated Norwich City 7-0 and Southampton on penalties in their two Carabao Cup matches without the marksman.
In the latter game, Kai Havertz took on the role of a ‘false nine’ and performed admirably, rising highest to head home the opener just before halftime.
Che Adams equalized shortly after the restart when Kepa Arrizabalaga could only parry a Kyle Walker-Peters shot, but the Spaniard would be the hero once more, saving a Theo Walcott penalty as the Blues won in the shootout.
It was the Spaniard’s third penalty save this season, following the UEFA Super Cup victory over Villarreal and the previous Carabao Cup match against Aston Villa.
The draw for the quarter-finals will take place on Saturday, and there will be hopes that by then, Lukaku will be back leading the line.
Chelsea spent a lot of money to bring the 28-year-old back to Stamford Bridge after he was the focal point of Inter Milan’s Serie A-winning team.
After a strong start to life back in west London, his form began to wane, and when he hobbled off the field against Malmo, he had four goals in 11 appearances.
His spirits, however, appear to be unaffected by either his loss of form or his ankle injury.
Lukaku was at Stamford Bridge in the middle of the week, cheering on his teammates, and he joined the celebrations in the changing room at full-time.
He posted a message and a photo to Twitter.
