Revealed: What Chelsea owners told to Graham Potter before Newcastle loss

Revealed: What Chelsea owners told to Graham Potter before Newcastle loss

According to the  Athletic (subscription required) (h/t Express), Chelsea’s owners gave manager Graham Potter their unshakable support soon before the Blues’ 1-0 loss to Newcastle United.

When Thomas Tuchel was fired on September 7, the club turned to Potter and signed him to a five-year deal. Despite a very early hiccup in his reign, they will continue to support him and his long-term project.

After a strong start, Chelsea have not won a league game in five and have lost three in a row, most recently against Newcastle at St. James’ Park.

The Blues are now ninth in the table, 16 points behind London rivals Arsenal and eight points behind Tottenham Hotspur, another city rival.

Although defense may have been a problem in recent games, scoring has become a recurring issue. This season, the Blues have scored 17 goals in 14 league games. Typically, teams scoring at this rate are in the bottom half of the standings.

In the last three league games, Chelsea has never exhibited the ability to mount an attack, maintain it, and create many chances against the opponent.

It cannot be solely attributable to the quality of the players, as the Blues own some elite-level talents. The manager may bear some responsibility, but that is not where the buck stops.

When Potter joined the team, preseason play had not yet begun. After the international break in September, Chelsea played 13 games in 43 days before the World Cup break, including eight away from home.

Therefore, the manager’s timetable has been demanding in order to get the most out of these players without spending much time with them on the training field.

Therefore, the owners should support the manager and hope that he and his team produce better results in the second half of the season.
