Report reveals main reason why Spurs backed out of the race for Leandro Trossard
The Athletic reported that Tottenham decided not to sign Leandro Trossard because the club believed the Brighton star would not have a high resale value.
Trossard was acquired by Arsenal for £27 million after the attacker fell out with Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi (Sky Sports).
However, in the week prior to his move to the Emirates Stadium, the winger was heavily linked with Spurs (Football Insider).
Later, on 19 January, Charlie Haffenden reported that Tottenham had only offered £12 million for Trossard, which the Seagulls “laughed off.”
The Athletic have now explained that the Belgian international was near the top of the Lilywhites’ January transfer wish list for attacking reinforcements.
According to the report, Trossard matched the profile of the attacker Antonio Conte’s squad was seeking and offered the added benefit of being able to operate as a wing-back.
Spurs believed the 28-year-old lacked resale value, which is why they were unwilling to meet Brighton’s asking price for him.
If resale value was the primary reason why Tottenham did not complete the transfer, that is not a good look for the club’s upper management.
However, it is unknown where the 28-year-old ranked on Conte’s wish list. The fact that the rumors only surfaced after his dispute with De Zerbi suggests that Spurs viewed it as an opportunity more than anything else.
