Report: German manager ready to leave role for Manchester United post, on one condition

When it comes to hiring an interim manager, Ralf Rangnick is one of the most intriguing options for Manchester United.

Rangnick has been linked for three weeks, with  BILD journalist Christian Falk claiming his interest following City’s loss.

After a 4-1 loss to Watford last Sunday, United finally acted to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, recognizing that he would be unable to turn the team’s fortunes around.

A new report in  The Times provides an update on Rangnick’s stance, and it’s an intriguing one.

Rangnick is excited about the interim position, but he does not want it to end there. He is looking for a longer-term commitment, but not necessarily as a manager.

The Times report: “Rangnick is willing to leave his role as head of sports and development at Lokomotiv Moscow, but only if he is given a significant role at United beyond this season.”

Rangnick previously worked as the sporting director of both RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg, where he was in charge of implementing forward-thinking recruitment strategies that catapulted both clubs into Champions League contention.

He is currently serving in a similar strategic role in Russia, but appears to be willing to give that up for the United States job.

United did hire John Murtough as director of football in January, which may be an impediment to Rangnick being promoted beyond interim manager after next summer.

This will necessitate some creative thinking on United’s part in order to develop a role that allows both Murtough and Rangnick to do their jobs.

Rangnick’s interest in United is appreciated, and the club should seize the opportunity to put his football knowledge to good use.

Rangnick presiding over Mauricio Pochettino or Erik Ten Hag next summer could be a dream scenario if United can successfully plot the path to get there.
