Reece James entangled in bizarre Chelsea training routine amid injury worries

Reece James entangled in bizarre Chelsea training routine amid injury worries

Twenty-five Chelsea players, including Reece James, have jetted off to Abu Dhabi for a warm-weather training camp before the domestic season resumes.

There are 12 academy players and a few injured players in the group.

Included in this group are James and Wesley Fofana, who, like Ben Chilwell and N’Golo Kante, will be unavailable for the Blues’ upcoming match against Bournemouth on December 27.

Both defenders have been out since early October after suffering knee injuries in separate games against AC Milan.

Fofana was a long shot to make Didier Deschamps’ France squad, although his chances may have improved with Les Bleus’ injury problems, and James was expected to be Gareth Southgate’s starting right defender. Instead, they’ve spent the last two weeks resting and recuperating in the UK.

Three weeks before the start of the domestic season, Chelsea fans have received a huge boost.

James was spotted back out on the field, this time participating in some sort of strange drill. The 22-year-old seen on camera heading a ball against the cross bar from two yards out with his teammates waiting in a line behind him.

After missing his initial header in what appears to be a race, he scores the next two and keeps sprinting back to the line where his teammates had set up an arch with their legs to catch the ball.

James’ return to physical training is excellent news for fans hoping to see him back on the club team soon, albeit it’s unclear what the larger purpose of the drill is.

Without the Englishman, Chelsea lacked a consistent presence in the midfield and lacked a sense of stability across the field.
