Real Madrid lower than Man City and PSG as UEFA ranks Europe’s Top 10 clubs

UEFA has identified the ten best clubs in Europe based on their current coefficient rankings.

It is fair to say that the rankings have perplexed many football fans, particularly the placement of Real Madrid, the defending European champions, in sixth place.

In the meantime, Manchester City has supplanted Bayern Munich atop the table.

UEFA’s Top 10 clubs (Dec 2022 – Based on five-year coefficient)

Let’s take a look at the top 10, per UEFA’s official website:

1 (+1 change since last year) Man City (ENG) 131.000

2 (-1) Bayern (GER) 130.000

3 (=) Liverpool (ENG) 123.000

4 (=) Chelsea (ENG) 123.000

5 (+1) Paris Saint-Germain (FRA) 112.000

6 (-1) Real Madrid (ESP) 110.000

7 (=) Barcelona (ESP) 98.000

8 (+1) Man United (ENG) 97.000

9 (-1) Juventus (ITA) 90.000

10 Ajax (NED) 89.000

Manchester United is ranked eighth? Barcelona is sixth and Chelsea is fourth.

Surprising, perhaps. Real Madrid’s sixth-place finish despite winning the Champions League, La Liga, the Spanish Super Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup has many on social media scratching their heads.

How are UEFA’s coefficients calculated?

A 2018 article published on the official UEFA website states,  “The club coefficients are based on the results of clubs competing in the five previous seasons of the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Europa Conference League. The rankings determine the seeding of each club in relevant UEFA competition draws.”

It becomes more complicated when teams that advance in the Champions League and Europa League are allocated points.
