After Atletico Madrid slip to Levante, Real Madrid held to a draw. Madrid had an opportunity to gain some ground over their league leaders rivals. Zidane men failed to take maximum advantage after they found themselves fighting for a point after Real Sociedad fell behind to a goal by Cristian Portu before Vinicius Junior rescued a point for the hosts.
This draw gives Atletico Madrid a five-point advantage over Real Madrid who stand third. Real Madrid has however played one game more over their city rival who they play on Sunday.
Real Madrid coach admitted that it was his tactical changes at halftime that made his team settle for a draw. The Frenchman opted to switch formation at halftime shifting to a three men central defence, which allowed Cristian Portu to net in at a far post and take the visitors ahead in the 56th minute.
Zidane however said he decided to make such tactical changes because he was not happy with the way his team pressed. He said his team looked very tired and he was only trying to execute a change to change the dynamic of the game which instead hurt his team.
With Real Madrid travelling to Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday to face Atletico, Zidane feels his team is in a good form. He urged his team to remain calm terming the result against Sociedad as a result that they need to leave behind as it will not have to change the way they go into the derby. He has predicted however that it will be a great game.
The draw against Real Sociedad ended Zidane’s team a four-game winning steak, with the likelihood of further twists ahead. With the top three teams still yet to meet each other, it is clear that the title is yet still to be decided.
