Ranking the highest-scoring midfielders in the Premier League his season
Successful teams have multiple ways to score, and Premier League managers frequently seek a significant contribution from the central midfield position.
Several midfielders have found their scoring touch this season, with Martin Odegaard continuing his recent hot streak with a goal in Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Tottenham last weekend.
Following the latest goal scored by the Norwegian, we have decided to rank the Premier League midfielders with the most goals scored so far this season.
Alexis Mac Allister – Brighton (5)
Alexis Mac Allister is thriving at Brighton.
The midfielder has been an integral part of the Seagulls’ successful season thus far, as they continue to climb the standings despite Graham Potter’s departure. This season, Mac Allister has scored five goals in 16 league appearances for Brighton, matching his total from the previous season.
The 24-year- old’s impressive club performances earned him a spot in Argentina’s World Cup squad, where he started six games, including the championship match, as the South Americans were crowned world champions for the third time in Qatar.
As Brighton’s first-ever World Cup champion, Mac Allister’s contribution to that victory has increased speculation about his future. He was greeted as a hero upon his return to the Amex Stadium.
James Ward-Prowse – Southampton (6)
James Ward-Prowse has now scored six league goals this season after his brace helped Southampton defeat Everton 2-1 last weekend.
The Saints have struggled this season and remain at the bottom of the Premier League table, but midfielder Ward-Prowse has once again made a valuable contribution.
His Premier League-leading 16th free-kick goal came against Everton as he bent a brilliant set-piece past Jordan Pickford to score the game-winning goal.
This season, the 28-year-old has scored seven goals in all competitions and is now just two free-kicks shy of David Beckham’s divisional record (18). He is more than capable of surpassing his career-high 11 goals from the previous season.
Pascal Gross – Brighton (6)
Pascal Gross’ classification as a midfielder is debatable, given his versatility as a player for Brighton.
Gross has already played in both full-back positions, as a false nine, and in multiple midfield roles this season, with the German enjoying some of the best Premier League football of his career in 2022/23.
Gross has been a shrewd acquisition since joining Brighton from Ingolstadt for £3 million in 2017, proving to be an underappreciated component of an improving Brighton side.
This season, the 31-year-old has scored six goals and provided three assists in 18 appearances, his best season in terms of goalscoring since his first season with Brighton.
Gross, along with Alexis Mac Allister and Leandro Trossard, is the club’s top scorer in all competitions. This has been a crucial contribution for a Brighton team that lacks a reliable center-forward.
James Maddison – Leicester (7)
This season, James Maddison’s absence has perhaps best demonstrated Leicester’s dependence on him.
Last season, the midfielder had the best individual season of his career with 18 goals and 11 assists in 53 appearances across all competitions. This season, despite Leicester’s struggles, he has started in similarly impressive fashion to make himself impossible to ignore with England.
Gareth Southgate did not select Maddison for the World Cup despite his prolific season. He has seven goals and four assists in 11 league games, and the Foxes have lost four consecutive games since the start of the season without him.
Newcastle is believed to still be interested in midfielder James Maddison despite failing to sign him last summer. He would be the type of player who could elevate the club’s ambitious project to the next level.
Martin Odegaard – Arsenal(8)
Martin Odegaard is the Premier League’s leading scorer among midfielders after scoring his eighth goal of the season during Arsenal’s North London derby victory over Tottenham last weekend.
Odegaard is currently in the best form of his career after maturing into his role as Arsenal captain, with the Norwegian having been instrumental to the club’s early season success.
Odegaard’s fifth goal in his last seven Premier League appearances was scored with a fantastic finish from the edge of the penalty area in the 24-year-old’s goal against Spurs.
Odegaard has already surpassed his goal total from last season and has emerged as one of the Premier League’s best players for his command of Arsenal’s midfield.
The Gunners are leading the division by five points over Manchester City as they seek their first Premier League championship since 2003/04.
