Rangnick clarifies why Man Utd have fallen behind Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham in top 4 race
Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has stated that a lack of goals is the primary reason why the Red Devils have fallen behind Arsenal, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur in the race for a top-four spot.
The Premier League’s four titans are presently locked in a fierce battle for a place in the Champions League, with Manchester City and Liverpool leading the way.
Chelsea, managed by Thomas Tuchel, appear to be well set to finish third between now and the end of the season, with Arsenal now claiming the final Champions League spot.
North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur are a position behind Arsenal, having amassed three points fewer, while Manchester United are at the bottom of the pack.
Rangnick’s team has struggled in recent weeks, with only five league wins since the turn of the year – a stretch that includes four draws.
The German coach has admitted that the team’s inconsistency is due to a lack of firepower.
“After Christmas we focused to make sure the team was creating enough chances but since then we have had games like the FA Cup game against Middlesbrough, the home game with Watford and a few other games where we didn’t score enough goals from the opportunities we created.
“That’s why we have dropped too many points, eight draws in total in the league, and too many moments where we were 1-0 or even 2-0 up – at Aston Villa – and then ended up drawing.”
Rangnick’s assertion will undoubtedly pique the interest of Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur fans.
The north London duo have actually scored less frequently than the Red Devils, with Mikel Arteta’s side scoring 44 times and Spurs scoring 47 times, compared to Manchester United’s 48.
However, Cristiano Ronaldo’s goalscoring heroics have brought a significant boost to the Red Devils’ score.
This season, the Portuguese superstar has scored 18 goals in all competitions, with compatriot Bruno Fernandes’ total of nine goals coming in second.
