Raheem Sterling to miss the World Cup?

According to Pat Nevin of the BBC, Raheem Sterling, in his current form, is “not even in contention” for England’s World Cup roster.

Nevin, who is known for making controversial statements, is attempting to stir the pot prior to Southgate’s team announcement.

Sterling, who has not scored for the club since August, was substituted just before the hour mark in Saturday’s 4-1 loss to Brighton following another unproductive performance.

Before the trip to the south coast, Chelsea manager Graham Potter defended Sterling’s recent performances, but former winger Nevin claims the 27-year-old is “having a really, really bad time.”

“I’m watching Raheem Sterling right now and I’ve said that Graham Potter has got the best from every player since he has been there – with one exception,” the 59-year-old said.

“If he keeps playing the way he is right now, he’s not even a consideration for the World Cup.”

Following the loss at Amex Stadium, Sterling was also the lowest-ranked player in BBC Sport’s online player rating, with a score of 3.14 out of 10.

Gareth Southgate has until November 13 to submit his final roster for the World Cup in Qatar, which begins the following week.

Nevin said: “I’m watching Raheem Sterling right now and I’ve said that Graham Potter has got the best from every player since he has been there – with one exception. If he keeps playing the way he is right now, he’s not even a consideration for the World Cup.”

Sterling has scored 19 goals in 79 England appearances, and his three goals at Euro 2020 earned him a spot in Uefa’s Tournament Team of the Tournament.
