Rafael Leao sends Chelsea a January transfer hint worth £131 million amid ‘complications’ in his AC Milan deal
The Blues’ pursuit of AC Milan striker Rafael Leao has received a significant boost.
The 23-year-old was extensively linked with a move to Stamford Bridge during the summer, as Todd Boehly sought to strengthen the club’s attack.
The Blues are reportedly following the status of the winger while he negotiates a contract extension with the Rossoneri.
Leao’s San Siro contract expires in 2024, and he is thought to have a €150 million (£130.5 million) release clause.
According to Sky Italia, the Portugal international recently changed his agency, causing ‘chaos’ in his negotiations with Milan.
Leao is reportedly seeking annual compensation of €9 million to €10 million (£7.8 million to £8.7 million).
Despite further obstacles, it remains to be unknown whether the Italian giants and the Portuguese star can reach an agreement, but Chelsea will look to capitalize on the uncertainty surrounding his future at the club.
Leao has appeared 12 times for Milan in Serie A this year, contributing directly to 10 goals.
His outstanding performances have continued to pique the interest of Europe’s top teams, and the Blues appear eager to do everything it takes to secure his signing.
Boehly was cautioned against making an impetuous offer to sign Leao after the Brazilian failed to impress against Chelsea in the Champions League.
The winger did not contribute to a single goal against the west Londoners. Reece James, who dominated Milan’s left wing — both at home and on the road — frequently repressed him.
In an interview with BT Sport, Joe Cole questioned if Leao meets the requirements for a player of his caliber.
Former Chelsea midfielder said: “Do you know what? For all of his talent and everything tonight, there will be scouts here, and there will be question marks on his attitude.
“He went like most of his teammates tonight. He went a bit limp against James. He didn’t get his own way. First 20 minutes, he was loving life, chest out, he was running at players.
“Reece James put it on him a bit, and we watched his body language,” added Cole, before reminding potential suitors that there is still time for Leao to elevate his game. “If you’re going to spend £100million or whatever his price tag will be, you’ve got to tick all of the boxes. There’s still some time left, and he is exciting.”
