Pundit delivers “embarrassing” transfer claim about United and Frankie de Jong with the Dutch ‘close’ to accepting Chelsea transfer

Alan Hutton believes it would be “embarrassing” for Manchester United if Chelsea signed Frenkie de Jong before them.

This comes as the ex-Spurs and Aston Villa defender suspects Erik ten Hag is becoming “frustrated” with the De Jong situation, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.

When asked about the latest, Hutton told Football Insider, “It will be embarrassing, there’s no doubt about that.

“De Jong was their number one target for this summer. Obviously Ten Hag identified him to come in and be a main player within that system, within that squad. Midfield is where they needed strengthening.

“It’s been going on for weeks now, we’re talking about Manchester United, one of the biggest clubs in the world. If you want him that much just go and get him. I don’t really know what’s going on in the background with finances and stuff like that.

“To lose someone like that to a rival, who you’re going to be challenging with is not ideal. It probably frustrates the manager. He would know the players he wants in from day one as soon as he walked through the door.

“It just seems that it’s been dragging on for weeks and weeks and weeks now. If he’s your number one target go and get him. Get him through the door and start to get to work.

“It just hampers him moving forward because if it gets done in weeks to come, they’ve already started the season and he’s not up to speed yet, it’s not helping him.“

Chelsea’s pursuit of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong may have been boosted by interest from both the Blues and Premier League rival Manchester United.

Frenkie De Jong, according to Rob Pratley, is “close to accepting that he has to leave FC Barcelona” this summer.

De Jong’s preference appears to be to stay with the La Liga club, but due to financial constraints, the need for a sale may force action before the deadline.

Barcelona president Laporta stated that “Frenkie’s our player, and we want him to stay at Barcelona. He wants to stay too.”

Chelsea are expected to make progress in the Dutchman’s negotiations next week, with Barcelona in a rush to make a big sale in order to register their new signings under La Liga regulations.

The Blues appeared to have beaten Man United to the midfielder, but it appears that the Bernardo Silva plan could stymie Todd Boehly’s efforts to sign the Dutch international.

This is because, according to Spanish journalist Gerard Romero, he has heard from agents that De Jong will join Paris Saint-Germain, Marco Verratti will join Manchester City, and Silva will be able to join the Camp Nou to form the triangle in this scenario.

It remains to be seen whether this is true, but keep in mind that this is the same journalist who reported on Friday that Chelsea are ‘hot’ on the 25-year-old’s case.
