PSV have just pointed to Manchester United something they cannot ignore about Cody Gakpo

PSV have just pointed to Manchester United something they cannot ignore about Cody Gakpo

The journalists at Louis van Gaal’s pre-Argentina quarterfinal press conference erupted in laughter when he was questioned about Angel Di Maria, who notoriously called him the “worst coach of his career” in an interview.

Van Gaal described Di Maria’s remarks as ‘sad’ before stating that he and Memphis Depay ‘now kiss each other on the mouth’ after spending time together in Manchester United

The room erupted in laughter at Van Gaal’s mocking retort, and Depay hid his face in humiliation while waving his fingers to indicate it wasn’t true.

Although Van Gaal was in fine, likeable form leading up to the quarterfinal match between the Netherlands and Argentina, which may have been an indication of his confidence, the South Americans advanced after a suspenseful penalty shootout.

Despite being eliminated in the quarterfinals of the World Cup in Qatar, Van Gaal’s team performed admirably, and Cody Gakpo was able to make his mark on the grandest stage thanks to the Netherlands’ performances.

Van Gaal did not joke that he and Gakpo “kiss each other on the mouth” during the World Cup, although he was likely tempted to do so after Gakpo scored three goals in three group-stage matches against Senegal, Qatar, and Ecuador.

Before the competition, the 71-year-old stated that Gakpo ‘has everything it takes to become a star,’ and his prediction held true in December. Gakpo was outstanding at the World Cup, elevating his profile to a new level after impressing with PSV.

Gakpo, 23, contributed 21 goals and 15 assists in all competitions for PSV last season, and he has contributed 13 goals and 17 assists through the first half of this season, so scouts from Europe’s top teams are well aware of him.

Gakpo might be the solution to Erik ten Hag’s depleted attacking options barely six months after Manchester United’s initial interest in him dwindled, with the January transfer window approaching. Manchester United were interested in Gakpo in the summer, but that interest has since waned.

It is believed that the club engaged in informal negotiations with the player’s representation during the summer. The United manager continues to adore Gakpo, and he indicated last week that he intends to get a goalscorer in January.

After a multimillion-dollar summer spending spree, club stats indicate that funds are “tight,” but PSV sports director Marcel Brands intimated this week that Gakpo’s price tag may be low enough for the Glazers to approve a winter transfer.

“You have to be realistic,” Brands explained at a PSV fans’ event on Monday evening when asked about Gakpo. “When you talk about Cody’s price tag, how many European clubs are able to buy a player of his calibre? Maybe ten or twelve clubs?

“You just need a player in that position and then also be able and willing to spend the money in January. We just have to see if it all happens. It must be a record transfer for PSV anyway, so then you know which direction it is going. More than €40m in any case.

“We have to see if it will all happen. In the media, it seems like all clubs are lining up, but the reality is that we are not yet aware of any interest. Cody is going on vacation now. If there was something going on, it might be known to Cody or his management. However, nothing is known to us.”

Despite Brands’ pretense of ignorance, numerous clubs have inquired about Gakpo, and it is believed the midfielder has been eager to leave PSV since the Dutch club’s Champions League play-off loss to Rangers in August.

Brands stated that the sale of Gakpo “must be a record deal for PSV,” implying that the player will be available for a transfer fee not much more than the €45 million they earned for Mexican winger Hirving Lozano in 2019 when he joined Napoli.

A price of €50 million is roughly equivalent to £43 million, which United could meet in January. It is comparable to what other, more polished attackers would command and a reasonable indication of the player’s current status.

Cristiano Ronaldo was the club’s highest-paid player, and his departure has left Gakpo with more than adequate wage budget flexibility. Ten Hag’s sole recognized striker is Anthony Martial, therefore it would be negligent not to recruit a striker in January.

Everyone is aware that Ten Hag wants a striker in January, and a price of approximately £43 million for Gakpo seems fair.
