Premier League red card rules explained as Joao Felix spoils debut vs Fulham

Thursday evening’s 2-1 loss to Fulham did not go as planned for Joao Felix’s Chelsea debut, as the forward was sent off in the second half.

Graham Potter selected the 23-year-old for the trip to Craven Cottage despite the fact that he only signed a temporary deal with Fulham from Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.

Felix displayed numerous exemplary qualities during the first half and managed to fire six shots at Bernd Leno.

However, shortly after Denis Zakaria was forced off with an injury, Felix’s debut was cut short by referee David Coote’s straight red card for a dangerous challenge on Kenny Tete.

In the 73rd minute, Carlos Vinicius scored his first goal for Fulham to seal the victory.

According to Premier League rules, Felix will miss the next three Premier League games despite having played only one game for Chelsea. Felix will serve a three-match suspension for his dangerous challenge.

According to the rules, a second yellow card results in a one-match suspension, the same as a professional foul.

A player is typically subject to a two-match suspension for disobedience and a three-match suspension for violent conduct. These are merely guidelines, and each incident will be evaluated on its own merits.

Felix will now miss the next three league games, meaning he won’t be available against Crystal Palace, Liverpool, or Fulham.
