Premier League matches WILL go over 100 minutes as referee slammed for taking pity on Man Utd during Liverpool thrashing

The length of Premier League games is approaching 100 minutes. Pierluigi Collina, the head of FIFA referees, has announced that there will be stricter enforcement of rules against time wasting in English football.

This will include adding stoppage time in the style of the World Cup. Collina, a former World Cup referee, has even reviewed last weekend’s Premier League matches and suggested that referee Andy Madley was lenient towards Manchester United by not adding more time at the end of their 7-0 defeat to Liverpool.

Surprisingly, only one minute was added at the end of the first half, and only three minutes were added at the end of the game.

IFAB, the organization responsible for making and amending the laws of football, has already approved the addition of extra time for certain crucial aspects of the game, such as substitutions, goal celebrations, injuries, delays caused by the use of video assistant referees (VAR), and incidents involving penalties and red cards.

FIFA aims to increase the amount of time that the ball is actively in play during matches, which was the goal of the additional time played for injuries during the World Cup last year. As a result, games frequently lasted longer than 100 minutes.

Collina said: “The criteria we have fixed was clear and the additional time given at the World Cup was well received. We saw four matches in the Premier League which were over 100 minutes last weekend.

“Two more should have had more additional time but they finished 4-0 and 7-0 and the referee decided not to give extra time added on.

“But at the World Cup, we had one game, Spain-Costa Rica which was 6-0 at 90 minutes and the extra goal scored could have been very important in deciding the Group. That is why it is always important to add the right time.”
