Premier League hands Casemiro harshest punishment that he never experienced during his nine years at Real Madrid

Casemiro was shown a straight red card last weekend during  Manchester United  Premier League victory over Crystal Palace for putting his hands around Will Hughes’ neck.

As a result of his three-game suspension, he has already received a sanction he never received during his nine seasons with Real Madrid.

During his nine-year tenure at the Bernabeu Stadium, Casemiro made 336 appearances for Real Madrid and helped the club win five Champions Leagues, three Club World Cups, and three La Liga titles. Last summer, he moved to Old Trafford after the Red Devils paid £70 million to secure his signature.

Casemiro, who has 69 international caps and was a member of Brazil’s World Cup squad last year, has transformed the Manchester United midfield and has been a major factor in the team’s improved form this season.

However, he was banned after his altercation with Hughes was deemed violent conduct. In addition, he will be unavailable for selection until the first leg of United’s Europa League play-off match against Barcelona, having already missed two matches against Leeds and one against Leicester.

During his long tenure in Madrid, Casemiro was only dismissed twice. On both occasions, he was sent off after receiving two yellow cards, resulting in one-game suspensions.

Casemiro was sent off for the first time during Real’s 4-1 La Liga thrashing of Real Valladolid in March 2019, after receiving a second yellow card.

Real defeated Barcelona 2-1 in La Liga in 2021, and the 30-year-old was subsequently dismissed after receiving two yellow cards within two minutes.

United drew 2-2 with Leeds at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Wednesday, and Casemiro’s absence was glaring. However, Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag refused to blame his star midfielder for the result.

“We have a great team and it doesn’t matter who is coming in, we have to win this game with 11 or with 15 players who are available and on the pitch,” the Dutchman said.

United has climbed to third place in the Premier League table despite a poor start to the season, having won 13 of their 22 matches. On Sunday, when the two teams meet for the second time in five days, they will attempt to gain the upper hand once again.
