Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa responds to Man Utd transfer link
Diogo Costa has expressed his desire to stay with Porto despite rumors connecting him with a transfer to Manchester United in the upcoming summer.
Manchester United has reached an agreement on a contract extension with David de Gea, whose current deal is set to end later this month. However, De Gea has faced criticism due to a series of subpar performances this season.
Diogo Costa, a product of Porto’s youth academy and who made his debut for the first team in 2019, is one of the goalkeepers being considered by United. His exceptional distribution skills have caught the attention of the club.
When directly asked about the potential transfer to United following Porto’s Portuguese Cup match on Sunday, Costa dismissively responded by saying, “That’s the internet.”
Costa then added: “It is a happiness and an honour to play for my favourite club.
“What they say is what they say, there is nothing concrete, I have a contract until 2027 and I hope to continue, let’s see.”
In the wake of Manchester City’s 2-1 victory over Manchester United in the FA Cup final at Wembley, former United captain Roy Keane strongly advocated for the club to find a replacement for David de Gea.
Keane’s call for a replacement came as a result of De Gea’s inability to prevent Ilkay Gundogan from scoring the second goal for Manchester City.
“They need a new goalkeeper and world-class striker, I’m sick of saying it!’ Keane told ITV.
“De Gea’s not good enough, he is not going to be the one to take United back to winning trophies.”
Following Manchester United’s loss in the FA Cup final, coach Erik ten Hag came to the defense of David de Gea. Despite the defeat, ten Hag expressed support for De Gea, offering his backing and defending the goalkeeper’s performance in the match.
“In this moment, I don’t want to talk about such issues of criticism because we played all a great season, including David De Gea, he played a fantastic season,” the United manager said.
