Sporting CP defeated Arsenal in the round of 16 of the UEFA Europa League through a penalty shootout (5-3), resulting in Arsenal’s elimination from the competition. 

Fans on Twitter heavily criticized Fabio Vieira for his poor display in the match.

 After 120 minutes of play, the game ended with a scoreline of 1-1, with Granit Xhaka scoring the opening goal for Arsenal in the 19th minute, and Pedro Goncalves equalizing for Sporting CP with an impressive goal from the halfway line in the 62nd minute.

During extra time, Arsenal put pressure on Sporting CP, but goalkeeper Antonio Adan was alert and denied Gabriel Magalhaes’ header from a Martin Odegaard free kick. 

Sporting CP also benefited from a goalline clearance to save them from another Magalhaes header from a corner. In the penalty shootout, Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli missed his spot kick, hitting it straight at Adan. 

Sporting CP’s Manuel Ugarte was sent off for his challenge on Bukayo Saka, reducing the Portuguese side to 10 men.

However, fans were not happy with Fabio Vieira’s performance, as he did not complete any key passes, dribbles, or crosses before being 

substituted in extra time. One fan on Twitter stated that Vieira had no impact on the game.

One fan wrote on Twitter that Vieira had zero influence. “Can’t even be mad at Martinelli m, Vieira had no influence on this game.”

Another disgruntled fan expressed his disappointment with Fabio Vieira’s performance, stating that he felt like Arsenal were playing with 10 men because of Vieira’s poor display. “we was playing with 10 men until deep into extra time vieira was non existent.”

Vieira, who transferred to the team during the summer, has played 29 games and contributed two goals and six assists.

What is next for Arsenal 

Although the loss to Sporting CP was difficult for Arsenal to accept, it could potentially benefit their pursuit of the Premier League title. Currently, they are leading the league with 66 points from 27 matches and hold a five-point advantage over Manchester City.

Next up, Mikel Arteta’s side will face Crystal Palace in a Premier League match on March 19, as they are not participating in any other competitions at the moment except for the title race.
