Yesterday, Sportswitness reported that Chelsea was planning to make a second proposal to Manuel Ugarte, according to information from Portugal.
The club from London was willing to offer more than the €60 million release clause demanded by Sporting in order to secure the transfer of the midfielder.
However, PSG also expressed their willingness to pay the same amount and presented Ugarte with a considerably higher salary package compared to Chelsea.
Nonetheless, Chelsea was expected to come back with an improved wage offer, and although it would still be lower than what the French club had offered, there were indications that it could be effective.
Ugarte’s preference for English football seems to have played a role in Chelsea’s favor. According to a report from Record on Saturday evening, Ugarte has made the decision to join Chelsea. The Portuguese newspaper states that the deal is finalized and treats it as a definite outcome.
With the decision made in favor of Chelsea, an official announcement is likely imminent.
As mentioned earlier, PSG had offered a salary of €5 million, while Chelsea’s improved offer amounted to €3.5 million, with both figures presumably after tax.
Chelsea’s triumph in securing Ugarte’s signing extends beyond outpacing PSG; they have also outmaneuvered several other Premier League clubs that had shown interest in the player in recent months.
