Player claims there is more pressure to win trophies at his new club than Spurs

Toby Alderweireld states that there is greater expectation on him to secure a championship at Royal Antwerp compared to his time at Tottenham Hotspur.

Alderweireld played for Spurs for six years and appeared in 236 matches after joining from Atletico Madrid in 2015.

During his time at Tottenham Hotspur, Toby Alderweireld played a significant role in the team’s progress under Mauricio Pochettino.

The Belgian international helped Spurs reach unprecedented levels in the Premier League and even guided them to the final of the Champions League in 2019, where they finished as runners-up.

Despite their impressive performances, the Spurs team that Alderweireld was a part of under Pochettino could be considered as one of the greatest teams in the history of the English top-flight that did not win any trophies.

Toby Alderweireld departed from Tottenham in the summer of 2021 and transferred to Al-Duhail, a Qatari football team. After a single season in the Qatari top division, he returned to his homeland Belgium and inked a deal with Royal Antwerp last summer.

Since he is a native of the country, the 34-year-old confessed that he feels a stronger urge to secure a championship with his current team than he did during his stint in North London.

Alderweireld told Het Laatste Nieuws (as relayed by Voetbal Primeur): “I do feel that responsibility, more than at Tottenham.

“I want to make the city and the club proud. It would be a disappointment to have to stop here in a few years without a trophy.

“That’s why I put a certain pressure on myself, sometimes maybe even a little too much.”

It is unfortunate that players like Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Rose, and Dembele had to leave Tottenham without any trophies, despite their exceptional contributions to the club.

It appears that history may repeat itself with the potential departure of Lloris and Kane from Spurs, leaving them with similar feelings of disappointment and regret.
