Piers Morgan discloses what Cristiano Ronaldo text him following Man Utd exit
Morgan and the Portugal star exchanged multiple messages in which they joked about Morgan’s newfound liberty after leaving Manchester United.
Cristiano Ronaldo texted Piers Morgan that he felt “free as a bird” following his departure from Manchester United, as reported by Piers Morgan.
The TV broadcaster, whose interview contributed to Ronaldo’s dismissal from United, believed that rumors of a transfer to Saudi Arabia were premature.
WHAT THEY SAID:
“I texted Cristiano a GIF of William Wallace in Braveheart shouting: ‘Freedom!’,” Morgan revealed. “He thought that was a perfect summation of how he felt. ‘Free as a bird’ was his response.”
On reports of a blockbuster move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, Morgan responded: “He thinks that if he does well at this World Cup, he’ll get what he really wants, which is a club in the Champions League that extends his record and his legacy.
“It’s not about money at this stage of his career. It comes down to a burning desire to play football at the highest level, to break records and win trophies. And he has done that in more countries than any other player in history.”
Ronaldo may be interested in a move to one of Europe’s best clubs, but his World Cup performances are hurting his chances.
The 37-year-old has struggled since scoring a record-setting penalty on the opening day, and was personally responsible for South Korea’s equalizer against Portugal as they scored a historic comeback triumph on Friday.
Ronaldo is the first player to attempt exactly 100 shots in World Cup competitions since full shot data became available (1966).
Despite suffering a loss on matchday three, Portugal won Group H and will face Switzerland on Tuesday in the round of 16.
