Pep Guardiola tipped to start ‘complete’ Man City player against Manchester United

Manuel Akanji joined Manchester City on the final day of the transfer window to provide defensive depth during an injury crisis.

The 27-year-old has since made three appearances and might become a regular after impressing in the back line.

After defeating Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, Manchester United will visit the Etihad Stadium for City’s next match.

And even though Pep Guardiola may have Nathan Ake, John Stones, Ruben Dias, and Aymeric Laporte available for the derby, Noel Whelan feels Akanji’s position is secure.

When asked if the Swiss international could keep his spot in defence, he told Football Insider: “I do. I don’t think he’s been brought in just for backup. He looks a really useful player, and someone they can use and utilise throughout the season.

“We’ve seen his interviews, he’s a very confident young man. He’s quick, aggressive, good in the air – he’s the complete centre-back. I think he’s living up to his comments when he came in and was introduced to the media.

“These are opportunities you have to take. Players like Laporte are out of the picture right now, and he’s doing everything right to stake his claim and stay ahead of him in the side. He’s making everyone sit up and take notice.”

Laporte has not played football in months due to a knee injury that has kept him inactive for the whole season.

Guardiola was down to a single healthy central defender for a brief time due to injuries to Ake and Stones.

Now that Akanji has been added as City’s fifth defender, Guardiola has ample injury insurance.

The 27-year-old performs admirably whenever he’s selected, therefore he doesn’t deserve to lose his starting position in October when United make the short journey.
