Pep Guardiola reveals why Man City were unable to defeat Aston Villa

Pep Guardiola cited a lack of precision in the final third as the reason Manchester City departed Villa Park with a single point on Saturday instead of three.

City traveled to the Midlands to face a struggling Aston Villa team that had lost four of its first five matches, but were left unhappy as the hosts punished City for its goal-scoring profligacy.

City failed to record a shot on target in the first half, but Erling Haaland opened the score in the second half as City appeared more aggressive and hungry.

However, Haaland, Riyad Mahrez, and Phil Foden failed to capitalize on the openings given by City, and Villa equalized with 15 minutes remaining through Leon Bailey.

City’s performance was by no means objectively poor, but for significant portions of the match, their play lacked the typical slickness and precise edge. Guardiola was generally satisfied with his team’s performance, but was disappointed by their clumsy finishing.

“Defensively, I like everything. Good game. We conceded just one from one shot on target in 90 minutes.

“Offensively, in the final third, normally players who are so precise missed a lot. We were not precise in our final third touches and our simple things, especially in the first half. We had chances to score a second when the game was in our hands but didn’t.”

Pep stated that he was not shocked that current Premier League season is shaping up to be one of the most competitive ever following five years of City and Liverpool supremacy.

“Just six games, many games to play, we know it’s always tough, it’s not my first season here, it’s my seventh. Games are tough away and at home.”
