Pep Guardiola dodged  bullet as a failed 24-year-old transfer target  dropped at Chelsea now left out of WC squad

Manchester City intended to replace Benjamin Mendy and Oleksandr Zinchenko with Marc Cucurella from Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer, but decided against paying his £50 million-plus asking price.

The Sky Blues acquired Sergio Gomez from RSC Anderlecht for a significantly reduced fee, although he has not had the finest start in Manchester.

Cucurella’s transfer to Chelsea has also not gone according to plan, so Pep Guardiola may feel he has avoided a bullet.

This season, the 24-year-old has made 18 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions, registering two assists. He’s fifth on the team in average tackles (1.7 per game) but fifteenth in interceptions (0.5).

Guardiola sought the Spanish international for his attacking threat at left-back, but he ranks 14th for opportunities created (0.5), 12th for successful dribbles (0.4), and 9th for average passes (40.3) despite ranking fourth for accurate crosses (0.8).

International ambitions were the reason he left Brighton in the first place, so his omission from Spain’s World Cup squad will be painful.

Cucurella has been moved between left-back, center-back, and left wing-back this season, and he was just benched in Chelsea’s 1-0 loss to Newcastle United, thus his management is also unhappy with his performance.

The 24-year-old has been replaced in or out of eight of his 13 Premier League games, so City’s loss to Chelsea was hardly the worst thing that could have happened.
