Pep Guardiola delivers verdict on Joao Cancelo’s Man City future after Bayern Munich loan
Pep Guardiola insists no decision has been made regarding Joao Cancelo’s future at Manchester City following the summer expiration of his loan to Bayern Munich.
Cancelo left City on transfer deadline day for more consistent playing time, joining Bayern until the end of the season.
Cancelo may have played his final game for City, as the Bundesliga champions have the option to make the loan permanent for approximately £61 million.
Before being announced at Bayern, the fullback posted what appeared to be a farewell compilation video with the caption “Once a Cityzen, always a Cityzen.”
Later, he clarified that the video was not a final farewell, and he left the door open for a summer return to the Etihad, where he is under contract until 2027.
Now, manager Guardiola has commented on Cancelo’s future, stating that no decision will be made regarding any player with an uncertain future until the end of the season.
“Now he’s there. We see what happens at the end of the season,” the manager said. “At the end of the season we talk many many things about many many players.”
Guardiola was eager to clarify these remarks by emphasizing that the position on Cancelo’s future is identical to that of any other City player.
He said: “Now I say that about Joao, it looks like this and everyone says… At the end of the season, every season happens the same, we’re going to talk with many players, happens since I arrive. Maybe next season we could continue with absolutely all the players. Could be new ones. I don’t know.
“Ask me about Joao, about myself, nobody knows what is going to happen. Now the transfer window is closed, over. Focus on four months, a little bit more, left. After we will see what happens. I don’t know what happens with any single player.”
