Pep Guardiola decides on Man City’s future after heartbreaking Champions League elimination
Manchester City’s heartbreaking Champions League elimination to Real Madrid has reinforced Pep Guardiola’s determination to bring the club the legendary trophy.
Madrid stunned Manchester City with another dramatic late comeback in the Bernabeu, handing Guardiola and his squad their most crushing defeat.
Despite his disappointment at missing out on a place in the final, Guardiola is reported to be even more determined to win the trophy.
To demonstrate his dedication, the 51-year-old coach is expected to sign a contract extension that will keep him at City until 2025.
City were eliminated 6-5 on aggregate after conceding twice in 91 seconds, before a Karim Benzema penalty in extra time.
Guardiola has yet to win European club football’s top award in six attempts since taking over as City manager in 2016.
Guardiola’s latest failure has fueled speculation that the Spaniard will leave City at the end of the season, when his current contract expires.
Guardiola, on the other hand, is delighted to work with Europe’s striker sensation Erling Haaland, who is likely to join the club this summer in a £63 million transfer from Borussia Dortmund.
Guardiola believes Haaland can make all the difference in City’s quest to conquer Europe, despite the fact that City blew a number of chances to effectively kill the tie in the first leg at the Etihad.
Guardiola, who won the Champions League twice with Barcelona, has not hoisted the cup since 2011, falling short at Bayern Munich and now City.
Guardiola, on the other hand, believes he has unfinished business with the tournament, despite the fact that his immediate focus is on ensuring City beats out Champions League finalists Liverpool in the Premier League title fight.
City are one point ahead of Liverpool in the title race, but if Liverpool beat Tottenham at Anfield 24 hours sooner, City could be trailing before kick-off against Newcastle on Sunday.
Guardiola understands that his team must recover from their European heartbreak and win the title in order to have something to show for another amazing season.
