‘People need to understand we are Arsenal’ – Nuno Tavares reveals why Arsenal will win against Liverpool
Despite the Gunners‘ poor recent record at Anfield, Nuno Tavares says the squad is ‘confident’ of taking all three points in Saturday’s match against Liverpool.
Arsenal last won a Premier League game against Liverpool in Merseyside in September 2012, when Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla scored in a 2-0 victory.
Mikel Arteta was in the starting lineup on that day, but the Spaniard will have to watch from the sidelines this time as his team looks to maintain their strong form.
After losing their first three games of the season, Arsenal have gone eight games unbeaten in the league – including six wins – to close the gap on fourth-placed Liverpool to two points.
In addition, Arsenal left-back Tavares has spoken out about the positive atmosphere in the locker room ahead of this weekend’s pivotal game.
“We are confident about going to Anfield and winning the game with a clean sheet or not,” Tavares told Sky Sports.
“We want to win the game and more importantly than a clean sheet, get the three points.
“Arsenal is a big club with big players. It is normal for us to win games. For us, we want to be in the top one.
“‘I don’t know why people are so surprised. People need to understand we are Arsenal and we need to win games to reach our objectives.”
Aaron Ramsdale has impressed for the Gunners since joining from Sheffield United in the summer.
The goalkeeper has received widespread praise for his commanding performances, and Tavares believes he has been crucial to Arsenal’s defense.
“He’s been the most important guy in the defensive unit because he’s helped us so much,’ said the left-back.
“He’s always talking, helping me stay in the position I need to be in.
“He’s very strong and when we can’t save something, he’s there always. We are so proud of him.’
“The whole team likes to defend,” Tavares added.
“We are being aggressive with every ball and we don’t like conceding goals. That’s the key to defending well.”
