Paul Merson and Chris Sutton agree on Aston Villa vs Chelsea score prediction as Graham Potter commended
Chelsea will look to make it five wins in a row in all competitions this weekend when they face Aston Villa in the Premier League.
Graham Potter’s side defeated AC Milan 2-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday night, and the Blues will be confident of picking up another three points on Sunday.
Potter has Chelsea playing good football again, with 10 goals and only one conceded in their last four games.
Todd Boehly took a risk when he fired well-liked manager Thomas Tuchel in September, but the German’s replacement at Stamford Bridge is already winning fans over after some impressive recent performances.
Despite being unbeaten in their last four games, Villa haven’t been picking up many points under Steven Gerrard, and the former Liverpool captain is under intense scrutiny.
He’ll be looking to put a stop to the rot and will prepare his team to fight, but Chelsea should have enough to get the job done.
As usual, many pundits, including Paul Merson and Chris Sutton, have been debating who they believe will win.
Former Arsenal striker Merson believes the Blues will be too strong for Villa and will come away with three points.
“Graham Potter has quietly and steadily got some phenomenal football results recently,” he told Sportskeeda.
“I’d said they had a big week coming up and all of a sudden, they’ve done the business – fair play to them. Chelsea have not got the accolades they’ve deserved, to be honest – they’ve done the double over AC Milan and they beat Wolves comfortably.
“Chelsea were wasteful last week, and could’ve beaten Wolves by any score if they’d taken their chances. Aston Villa will make it hard this week, but Chelsea will have too much for them.”
Merson’s prediction: 1-3
Sutton is of the same mind and has backed Chelsea to win at Villa Park.
“I think the feeling among Aston Villa fans is that the jury is out on Steven Gerrard at the moment,” he told BBC Sport.
“It’s as much to do with Villa’s style of play as their results – that’s becoming a problem but he is hardly likely to change and be expansive against Chelsea, because they will be a nightmare to play against.
“Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is scoring goals and Graham Potter is showing how adaptable he is as a manager. Villa will be under pressure to win at home, and I can see the nerves getting the better of their players.”
Sutton’s prediction: 0-2
