Paul Merson agrees with Graham Potter on Kai Havertz Chelsea verdict amid bold Arsenal claim

Kai Havertz received high praise from both Paul Merson and Graham Potter for his performance in Chelsea’s win against Leicester City.

The 23-year-old played a crucial role in securing the Blues’ victory by scoring the opening goal just before half-time in his new position as a false-nine.

Although he had some difficulty adjusting to the role initially, Havertz has adapted well and has been performing impressively. He was even compared to one of the greatest players in the history of the Premier League for his goal against Leicester.

Enzo Fernandez played a long ball over the Leicester City defenders to locate Kai Havertz, who had successfully evaded his marker.

Havertz then struck the ball on the volley and chipped it over Danny Ward, leaving the goalkeeper standing still as he observed the ball soar over him.

Paul Merson was amazed by the goal scored by Havertz, describing it as an “unbelievable goal.”

As quoted by Football Daily, the former Arsenal midfielder told Sky Sports: “What a goal! Kai Havertz has just got an unbelievable goal of the highest level.

“The ball has come to Fernandez; Fernandez has scooped the ball over the top to Havertz… and he just lobs it over the keeper. Bergkamp-eqsue for Holland against England many years ago.”

Before the match against Leicester, Graham Potter predicted a top-notch performance from Havertz, expressing his confidence in the player. The Chelsea manager stated, “I have no doubt about Kai.

“He’s a top player, delivers in the big moments, gives his best for the team all the time, and runs himself into the ground. He probably benefited from playing a slightly different position [against Dortmund] but whenever you ask him to do he does his best.

“That’s a great starting point. He’s still young and he’s got all the attributes to be a top player, score goals, assists, help the team. He can be an all-around fantastic attacking player.”

Havertz’s contract with Chelsea is set to expire in 2025, and he has played in 35 matches this season, contributing to nine goals.

Although he has only recently found his form, Potter is eager for Havertz to maintain a consistently excellent level of play throughout the entire season, rather than just a few games, as he is a vital player for the team.
