Pablo Mari’s father provides update after son stabbed in Italy

After his son was stabbed in an attack at a Milan shopping center on Thursday evening, the father of Arsenal defender Pablo Mari revealed reassuring information.

The Spaniard, who is presently on loan at Serie A club Monza, was one of six individuals stabbed at an Asago Carrefour shop.

The attack apparently occurred at 17:30 UK time, and Mari was brought to Niguarda Hospital after suffering a serious wound to his back at the hands of a 46-year-old man with a history of mental health issues.

Both Arsenal and Monza have officially confirmed that Mari did not sustain life-threatening injuries, as indicated by initial reports.

In the aftermath of the incident, the 29-year-father old’s verified to Cadena Cope that his son was conscious and recovering in the hospital.

“I was able to talk to my son and he told me that he was fine and that he loved us very much,” Mari’s father Pablo Mari told the radio station. These have been very bad hours.

“They have started calling me at 8 in the afternoon and my heart has skipped a beat. Veronica (Mari’s partner) has not told us how it happened, but she has told us that she has seen a person die in front of her. She has reassured us confirming that they are fine and that everything has been a fright for them.”

One person, a cashier in his 30s, is reported to have been killed in the attack, while three others sustained significant injuries and a fourth did not require hospitalization.

The attacker reportedly snatched a knife from the store shelves before randomly stabbing customers, however he was immediately seized by customers and business staff before being brought into custody.

Monza CEO Adriano Galliani and coach Raffaele Palladino visited Mari in the hospital following the attack, and Galliani verified to TG2 that Mari’s injuries were not life-threatening.

“Unfortunately I received terrible news, the store cashier died. As for Pablo Mari he had a fairly deep wound on his back, a penetrating one, which however did not touch vital organs such as lungs or other,” Galliani said.

“He is not in danger of life, certainly has problems but should recover quickly despite some injured muscles. He is conscious and getting stitches.”
