‘One option’: What Zinchenko told Mudryk about failed Arsenal move
Aleksandr Zinchenko disclosed the conversation he had with his Ukrainian compatriot, Mykhailo Mudryk, after Mudryk joined Chelsea in January.
Despite Arsenal’s persistent attempts to acquire Mudryk for around £60m during the winter transfer window, Shakhtar Donetsk rejected both offers.
Eventually, Chelsea outmaneuvered Arsenal and signed Mudryk for a deal that could eventually cost up to £89m.
However, Mudryk has encountered some difficulties during his initial weeks in the Premier League.
Mudryk has yet to score, but Graham Potter appears to have settled on a frontline of Joao Felix, Raheem Sterling, and Kai Haverz.
Arsenal signed Leandro Trossard to bolster their title challenge, and the Belgian international has made an immediate impact on Mikel Arteta’s starting lineup.
Sunday, Ukraine will travel to Wembley to face the Three Lions in a Euro 2024 qualifier. Mudryk will have a chance to make an impression on English soil.
Of his international teammate, Zinchenko told the Daily Mail: “I told him: ‘It’s gone already, it doesn’t matter what you wanted, what the other guys wanted.’
“Now you’re a Chelsea player, you signed a long-term contract and you have only one option, only one way: direct and forward.
“Unfortunately he didn’t become an Arsenal player – as I wanted personally! – but it’s life.”
