‘Not right’: Arteta reveals he really doesn’t like watching 21-year-old Arsenal star dribble with the ball

‘Not right’: Arteta reveals he really doesn’t like watching 21-year-old Arsenal star dribble with the ball

Mikel Arteta stated to Jamie Carragher on Monday Night Football’s special that he is not a fan of centre-backs dribbling while watching a clip of William Saliba, implying that the only reason the Arsenal star needed to bring the ball out in that manner was because he had already made a mistake.

It is difficult to criticize anything Saliba has accomplished this season. It is almost surprising to recall that there were little assurances prior to the campaign that he would be included in Arteta’s plans.

Clearly, he was still awaiting his opportunity to make his debut. There appears to be no longer any doubt as to whether Arteta holds Saliba in the same regard as his fans.

Alongside Gabriel Magalhaes, the Frenchman has been simply brilliant throughout the entire campaign. He has undoubtedly been the league’s best central defender.

However, Arteta may not be totally satisfied with everything Saliba has accomplished.

During Arteta’s conversation with Carragher, he was shown a footage of Saliba escaping a difficult situation away at Brentford.

The Gunners manager acknowledged that the 21-year-old can salvage the situation. However, he indicated that he feels nervous when Saliba is in possession for too long.

“What William has done here, for example, he has the composure to do that,” he told Monday Night Football. “In my opinion, I don’t like the central defenders dribbling.

“If Willy has to dribble here, it’s because two seconds before he’s done something that is not right because it’s not a necessity to do that action. But he’s still able to resolve the situation.”

This term, Saliba has not been flawless. But considering how courageous he is on the field, he appears to have made so few errors along the road. FBRef demonstrates that he is among the best center-backs in Europe at dribbling.

He is willing to drive with the ball from behind. However, he also seems to make sound decisions when it comes to determining whether to make a pass.

It is frightening to consider that he will likely improve in the next years. He is already among the Premier League’s elite.

Clearly, Arteta would prefer that he refrain from certain actions. It is difficult to see him being anything other than pleased with how his game is progressing.
