Nick Pope names Chelsea player as the most skillful member of the England squad
Nick Pope has named Raheem Sterling the most skilled player in England’s current squad.
In an interview with talkSPORT, the Newcastle United and Three Lions goalkeeper credited Sterling with having the best footwork.
Chelsea’s nifty wideman has a few moves in his arsenal to tie up opponents.
According to WhoScored.com, he has completed the joint-second most successful dribbles (11) from Graham Potter’s side in the Premier League.
Within an England team that isn’t exactly known for its flashy flicks and taunting tricks, the Stamford Bridge star is likely to come out on top in this category.
“Um, I’d go Raheem Sterling,” replied Pope when asked to name the most skillful Three Lions member.
While he has 11 successful dribbles this season, the 27-year-old also has 30 unsuccessful attempts.
This is an unwelcome record at Chelsea, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek coming in second with 18 failed attempts.
Sterling also does not always use skills like stepovers and flip-flaps.
He is more direct in his attacks, which he honed under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.
During his time at Liverpool, the attacker was more likely to try something flamboyant rather than something straightforward.
Sterling’s life hasn’t been all roses since joining Chelsea in the summer.
Perhaps he needs to reintroduce some skills into his game to rekindle the flame that has only been flickering in recent months.
