Since joining Liverpool in the summer, Darwin Nunez has been subjected to more criticism than is typical.

The fact that he was recruited for a club-record £85 million cost was not his fault, but he was always going to be under immense pressure to perform immediately.

After only 75 minutes of preseason action, Nunez was already being criticised by opposing supporters on social media. However, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp kept things in perspective.

“I’m not worried at all,” Klopp told ESPN after his side suffered a 4-0 loss against rivals Manchester United.

“The general judgement [on Nunez] is absolutely nil interest [to us]. It will be like this, and we all know it.

“It’s kind of a game or a joke for some people to pick out some situations where a player’s not doing well. That’s only a game from [fans of] other clubs, which is normal. Our fans probably do [the same] with signings of Manchester United. We cannot take this seriously.”

Nunez scored against Manchester City in the Community Shield and then scored against Fulham on the first weekend of the Premier League season a week later.

But he let himself down in the next match by headbutting Joachim Andersen of Crystal Palace, resulting in a three-match suspension.

Two goals have been scored by Nunez in six appearances for the Reds.

Prior to the start of the season, he was compared to Erling Haaland, but the fearsome Norwegian attacker has already scored 14 goals in 10 games for Manchester City.

Before returning to Anfield, Klopp will be hoping that Nunez rediscovers his form and confidence with Uruguay, who face Iran and Canada during the current international break.

However, a clip captured by a fan on the sidelines has gone viral on social media, with opposition fans once again making fun of Nunez.

One can imagine the reaction. Within eight hours, a single tweet had accumulated almost 5,000 retweets, 39,000 ‘likes,’ and thousands of comments.

Obviously, it was a bad try at a cross, but many other elite players have undoubtedly attempted the same — or even worse — in training.

What matters is Nunez’s performance on the field during competitive games.

In the next months, there is no reason why the 23-year-old cannot reproduce his performances for Liverpool and Uruguay that he shown for Benfica.

Those who have already written him off could someday eat their words.
