‘Never forget’: How Taiwo Awoniyi reacted after scoring against Liverpool despite having never played for them

On Saturday, Taiwo Awoniyi scored the most important goal of his career against Liverpool. It was not only a winning strike, but also a statement.

It was inevitable that Taiwo Awoniyi would score for Nottingham Forest against Liverpool.

The Nigerian needed two attempts to complete the goal, collecting the rebound off the post.

Even though he never played for Liverpool, that was a goal scored against his former team.

When Awoniyi was very young, the Reds signed him from the Nigerian league but were unable to secure a work permit.

Despite numerous loan deals to clubs in Europe, this circumstance never changed.

In 2021, Union Berlin acquired Awoniyi from Liverpool and he eventually achieved great success there.

How did Awoniyi feel when he scored against a team he had spent so much time with?

“I am happy but the most important thing is three points,” said the player, per the Daily Mail

“To score against Liverpool, I will never forget.

“I will always be grateful to them for scouting me from Nigeria. It was amazing to score against them.”

After selling Awoniyi, it was immediately apparent that Liverpool had made a mistake. They only received £6.5 million from Union, but the Nigerian quickly demonstrated that he was worth considerably more.

Forest confirmed this by paying £17.5 million to acquire his services less than a year after Liverpool sold him.

It is unfortunate that the Reds never had the opportunity to play him.

Because Awoniyi could have played a role, or at the very least, he possesses the ability to be on the team. We believe Jurgen Klopp could have accomplished great things with such a gifted striker.

Obviously, there are no grounds for holding grudges. Awoniyi’s goal is a message of patience to Liverpool; they should have waited at least another year before selling.

Instead of cursing as he scores against them, they would have gotten so much more out of the player if they had done so.
