Mudryk’s former coach tells him he made an error joining Chelsea over Arsenal

A former coach of new Chelsea star Mykhailo Mudryk believes that the Ukrainian would have been better off joining Arsenal in January rather than the Blues.

Shakhtar Donetsk rejected two offers from Arsenal for the Ukrainian’s services during the previous transfer window.

Sport Arena reported that the Gunners were “close to reaching an agreement” with Shakhtar, with only the bonus structure remaining to be determined.

However, Chelsea decided to submit a competing bid at the eleventh hour. The next day, Mudryk became a Chelsea player after Blues executives traveled to Poland and reached their own agreement with Shakhtar.

The chief executive officer of the Ukrainian giants, Serhii Palvin, told The Athletic that both clubs offered the same amount to sign Mudryk, with the only differences being the payment structure and types of bonuses. In addition, he criticized Arsenal’s treatment of the player.

Mudryk has since made his debut for Chelsea, impressing in a scoreless draw against Liverpool on January 21.

However, the 22-year-old’s former coach believes he would have been better off joining Arsenal, stating that only time will tell if he made the right decision by joining Chelsea instead.

Andreas Carrasco, who coached Mudryk in Shakhtar’s U19 squad, commented on the Ukrainian’s lucrative transfer.

In a recent interview (quotes courtesy of Tribuna), he stated: “[Chelsea] is a club that has been changing recently. But it is good for Mudryk to be in a club that always expects maximum results.

“Now, he needs to go through a period of adaptation. And only time will tell if it was the right decision for him or not.

“Today, Arsenal, with its style of play, could be more suitable for Mudryk, who successfully uses dribbling and plays one-on-one. It would be better for him, in my opinion.”
