Moises Caicedo reveals moment that convinced him to reject Liverpool
Moises Caicedo disclosed that a conversation with Enzo Fernandez played a decisive role in his decision to reject Liverpool and choose Chelsea instead.
Despite Liverpool having a record-breaking £111m offer accepted by Brighton & Hove Albion in August, and even scheduling a medical as they believed he was willing to join Anfield, Caicedo expressed a clear preference for Chelsea.
The London club had faced several rejections earlier but eventually secured a deal surpassing £115m after a prolonged and competitive transfer process.
Looking back on his transfer, Caicedo has shared that a pivotal factor in his decision was a phone call from his new teammate Fernandez.
Fernandez, who made a £106.7m move to Stamford Bridge in January, played a crucial role in convincing Caicedo to opt for Chelsea.
“It was a nice chat. I mean, the fact that a world champion was phoning you, one of the best midfielders in the world,” Caicedo said when appearing on Sky Sports’ Big Interview, quoted by 90min, alongside his fellow midfielder. “Receiving that call was very nice and he convinced me to come here.
“He said it was a great club, that there are many young players, there was a togetherness here. I have always enjoyed the bond in a team because I think that, if there is that bond, we can deal with any situation we may face: pressure, everything. So, that’s what motivated me to come here.
“Now, I’m enjoying playing alongside him, in training as well, in rondos. We are always together. So, I’m very happy and I’m trying to do things better every day, as Enzo said, to be a good example for everyone at the club.”
Fernandez expressed his satisfaction in successfully persuading Caicedo to join Chelsea, highlighting his happiness with the outcome.
“I called and told him that he had to accept and come because Chelsea is a great and ambitious club,” he revealed. “And I have to thank God for giving me the chance to play alongside him at Chelsea because we all know the great player he is, but he is also a fantastic person, so I’m thankful he chose Chelsea.”
Caicedo appears to have disregarded the appeal of reuniting with his former Brighton teammate Alexis Mac Allister, who, notably, also won the World Cup with Argentina.
Despite this potential reunion, Caicedo opted for Chelsea. As of now, Chelsea occupies the 10th position in the Premier League standings with 15 points, securing victories in only four of their 11 matches this season.
Caicedo, in particular, has experienced a slow beginning to his time at Stamford Bridge. In contrast, Liverpool is positioned third in the table, holding a nine-point advantage over their West London counterparts.
