Mikel Arteta to be without 5 Arsenal players against Fulham after latest transfer announcement

It’s becoming easier to predict Mikel Arteta’s decisions when it comes to naming his Arsenal squad on matchday.

And, with Nicolas Pepe joining Runar Alex Runarsson, Nuno Tavares, Pablo Mari, and Folarin Balogun as the latest senior player to leave on loan this week, the Gunners manager doesn’t have to make a single change for Fulham’s visit.

Given that he was an unused substitute in Arsenal’s first two games of the season against Crystal Palace and Leicester City, the writing was clearly on the wall when he didn’t make the 20-man squad for last weekend’s win over Bournemouth.

Having been replaced in the travelling party by summer signing Fabio Vieira, the 27-year-return old’s to France by joining OGC Nice has effectively allowed Arteta to avoid an awkward situation, as there would have been a huge decision to make regarding his involvement against the Cottagers had he still been at the club and available for selection.

Furthermore, Pepe’s departure reduces the number of players Arteta must leave out of his 20-man matchday squad for the London derby at the Emirates Stadium, and selections made this season can foreshadow the Spaniard’s decisions for his 100th Premier League game as a manager.

According to the club’s official website, the north London club now has 25 senior players listed, which means that if no further transfers are completed between now and 4.30pm on Saturday afternoon, as many as five first-team stars could be forced to watch their teammates from the bench.

With Hector Bellerin and Ainsley Maitland-Niles yet to make a matchday squad this season, it would be surprising if they are called up to face Fulham, especially given Arsenal’s depth at full-back and midfield, not to mention the pair’s ongoing transfer speculation.

Despite hints of a return from injury sooner than expected, Reiss Nelson appears set to miss Saturday’s match following Arteta’s comments in the pre-match press conference.

“Everybody has trained this week and everybody is fine and has been training and hopefully we have a full team to choose from apart from Reiss, who you know has been injured for a few weeks now,” he said.

If this is the case, and Arteta chooses to name the same 20-man matchday squad for the second week in a row, he’ll have to break the bad news to two remaining senior players, most likely Cedric Soares and Marquinhos.
