Michael Carrick told why Manchester United won’t appoint him as permanent manager despite strong statement win

Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes have told Michael Carrick that Manchester United will not repeat their’mistake’ of appointing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as permanent manager.

After coming under intense scrutiny prior to the November break, Solskjaer was finally handed his P45 on Sunday morning, and Carrick took caretaker charge for the first time this afternoon against Villarreal.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho scored to give United a 2-0 victory that also secured their place in the Champions League knockout stages.

Despite the Argentine’s coy response when pressed by the media this afternoon, United remains keen to appoint Mauricio Pochettino, and there is interest from both parties.

Carrick began his interim reign with a strong performance and result in Spain.

However, three years after Solskjaer was in a similar situation before eventually replacing Jose Mourinho on a permanent basis, lightning will not strike twice at Old Trafford.

According to BT Sport pundits Ferdinand, Scholes, and Owen Hargreaves, this is the case.

Ferdinand said: “I don’t think they will give it to Michael. One thing for certain is that they are actively looking for somebody to be an interim to take us through until the end of the season, then they will look for someone else to come in at the end of the season.

“You’re looking at Laurent Blanc, someone who wouldn’t be full-time. Someone like Pochettino – when he was out of a job there was murmurs he wanted to come to Man United – and depending on how PSG see it we have to wait and see.

“Man United need to make enquiries [and] if they want a manager who’s in a job, those conversations will be going on now.”

Scholes added: “This is Manchester United, they have to have the best in charge!

“Michael Carrick is a coach, he’s had one game in charge with no experience anywhere else, he can’t [be full-time manager]. As much as I like the lad, they can’t appoint him, they need the very best as interim or full-time.”

Hargreaves continued: “Obviously it can all change at Chelsea, but if Michael gets a result, if he’s winning like Ole…

“Nobody anticipated him getting the job full-time, but because his results were there they did it whether it was the right thing to do or not. But if Michael keeps clean sheets and climbs up the table, then they will have to look at him they have to.”
