Messi officially becomes a free agent as his Barcelona deal expires.
Lionel Messi has finally become a free agent after the Barcelona star’s deal lapsed at the end of June.
Although Barcelona were confident of signing Messi a renewal contract before the June 30 deadline, the 34-year-old is now formally free.
Barcelona still believes that Messi will finally sign a new deal, but his status as a free agent will cause concern among the club’s supporters and management.
Both parties continue to be in regular dialogue, with Barcelona president Joan Laporta agreeing with Jorge Messi, the player’s father, and agent.
An agreement remains to be intangible though, due to the complicated nature of Messi’s demands and Barca’s unpredictable financial situation.
According to Goal.com, both sides continue to discuss economic and tax-related issues concerning Messi’s contract, as well as the player’s image rights.
