Mason Mount humorously warns Chelsea teammate about race for golden boot after hat-trick
Mason Mount poked fun at Chelsea teammate Ben Chilwell after matching the defender’s goal tally with a hat-trick in Chelsea’s 7-0 win over Norwich City.
The “wonderfully talented” 22-year-old, as Gary Lineker described him, deservedly stole the show on Saturday afternoon when he scored his first Chelsea hat-trick.
Keep in mind that Mount had not scored since Chelsea’s Champions League semi-final victory over Real Madrid five months prior.
He didn’t appear to be lacking in confidence, as he ended his goal drought in spectacular fashion with a goal from outside the penalty box.
“I’m feeling like I’m at it in the last couple of games,” the England international told Chelsea TV after the game
“I’ve been waiting for a long time to get on the scoresheet, so yeah, it’s a brilliant feeling.”
Mount is now Chelsea’s joint-top scorer in the league, with three goals, along with Chilwell and Romelu Lukaku. Mount, on the other hand, did not appear to be aware of this at first.
When asked if he and Chilwell are competing for the golden boot, Mount joked, “He’s one [goal] ahead of me, isn’t he?”
“I’ve caught him up in one game, so I hope that continues.”
Mount went on to praise his fellow Chelsea academy graduates, saying they have played “major roles” at the club.
“To see Cal [Hudson-Odoi] and Reece [James] get on the scoresheet as well — they’ve been brilliant,” he added.
“Very pleased for Cal to get his goal. A great finish. Obviously, Reece as well for getting me an assist [laugh].
“Trevoh [Chalobah was] on the pitch, Rubes [Loftus-Cheek] came on. There are many academy boys coming through at the moment and playing major parts — it’s brilliant.”
