Mason Greenwood ‘meets up’ with Man Utd team-mates with dressing room ‘divided’ over return
According to reports, Mason Greenwood has reportedly been having covert meetings with certain Manchester United team members in an effort to mend his relationship with them.
Currently, he is not allowed to participate in training or games with the squad due to an internal inquiry. The investigation was launched after Greenwood was accused of attempted rape and coercive or controlling behavior, but the charges were dropped by prosecutors because of insufficient evidence.
The Crown Prosecution Service stated that there was no longer a likelihood of conviction due to a lack of key witnesses and new evidence, and therefore they were obligated to halt the case.
Despite being under investigation, Mason Greenwood has reportedly had clandestine meetings with certain members of the Manchester United squad, as per The Sun.
These meetings have taken place outside of the club’s training ground, and Greenwood has allegedly made contact with some players via social media as well.
The players he has reached out to have included some whom he knew from his time in the club’s academy. The purpose of these meetings is purportedly to allow the players to listen to Greenwood’s perspective and form their own opinions about his situation.
However, the article suggests that the Manchester United squad is solely focused on their on-pitch performance, as they are currently on a 16-game unbeaten streak. Nonetheless, Greenwood has not been able to rejoin the squad while the investigation is ongoing.
As Manchester United consider whether to allow Mason Greenwood to return to the squad, they will reportedly seek the input of leadership groups from both the men’s and women’s teams, as reported by ESPN.
It is not anticipated that a final decision will be made until the summer. However, there are concerns among some members of the United dressing room about Greenwood’s potential return.
According to The Times, some male players reportedly have “serious concerns,” and similar worries are shared by female staff members, as well as the women’s team. Additionally, the club’s commercial partners are said to be monitoring the situation.
Mason Greenwood is currently under contract with Manchester United for the next two and a half years, with the option to extend for an additional year. He has been with the first team since the 2018/19 season, and has played in 129 matches for the club, scoring a total of 35 goals.
Speaking after the decision to drop the charges against him was made by the Crown Prosecution Service, Greenwood said: “I am relieved this matter is now over. I would like to thank my family, loved ones and friends for their support.”
