Mason Greenwood Denied Bail, To Spend More Than A Month In Custody
Mason Greenwood was denied bail on Monday at Salford Magistrates Court.
Two days earlier, the Manchester United footballer was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault.
After arresting Greenwood for violating a previous bail agreement, the Crown Prosecution Service decided to charge him.
Greenwood was arrested in January on suspicion of rape, sexual assault, death threats, and assault.
His arrest occurred after officers responded to a report on social media of an 18-year-old woman making claims of violence and sexual threats.
In early February, Greenwood was released on bail. One of the conditions of his bail was that he not make contact with his accuser.
On Saturday, he was arrested again on suspicion of violating that condition.
On Monday, members of Greenwood’s family appeared in court.
Greenwood only spoke to confirm his name, birth date, and address.
On November 21, the 21-year-old is scheduled to appear at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court.
He will be detained until then.
All of Greenwood’s charges are related to the same woman.
The attempted rape allegedly occurred in October 2021, while the assault allegedly occurred in December 2021.
Greenwood’s alleged controlling and coercive behavior towards the woman occurred between November 2018 and October 2022.
Manchester United suspended Greenwood shortly after his arrest in January.
Since then, he has not played for the club or trained with his teammates.
