Mason Greenwood could dump England for a different nationality for 2022 World Cup Qualifiers.

Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood has just one England cap to his name, having made his international debut against Iceland in August 2020.

The 19-year-old was named in Gareth Southgate’s provisional Euro 2020 squad, but the player was compelled to withdraw due to injury.

Though his international career could lie away from the Three Lions, with a stunning report claiming he is wanted by another national team.

According to The Telegraph, Jamaica wants Greenwood to shift allegiances for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

They want him to help them enter the World Cup in Qatar next year.

How does Greenwood suit Jamaica acknowledging he has already played a competitive match for England?

Well, FIFA adopted a rule change that permits players to switch international allegiances if they have played no more than three competitive matches at a senior level prior to them turning 21.

Of course, Greenwood, who is still a teen, has only played one match for England at senior level, so he is suitable for Jamaica through his parents.

England are endowed with affluence of attacking prospects, but Alan Shearer emphasized the importance of Greenwood

Speaking before the competition, he told Goal: “I would personally take Greenwood as well, in case we are wanting and needing a goal, and struggling for that.

“I would have him in, he probably wouldn’t start the first couple of games but if you need a goal late on then he would be a great option to throw on.

“Having those extra three [places in the squad] might help someone like Greenwood get into the squad.”

Theodore Whitmore’s team have pulled together an eye-catching squad for the CONCACAF qualifiers for 2022, captained by Adrian Mariappa and including Bayer Leverkusen’s Leon Bailey, plus Bobby Decordova-Reid and Liam Moore.

Max Aarons, Demarai Gray, Ivan Toney, Liam Moore, Isaac Hayden, Ethan Pinnock, Mason Holgate, Rolando Aarons, Curtis Tilt, Jamal Lowe, Amari’i Bell and Kasey Palmer were earlier targeted as well.

JFF President Michael Ricketts established that many of the players they want to call up are in the process of obtaining a Jamaican passport, saying in March that notwithstanding setbacks due to the pandemic, he was ‘hopeful’ he would get them in a reasonable time.

Jamaica’s move for English players is evocative of their 1998 World Cup squad, which comprised seven players from these shores, including Frank Sinclair, Robbie Earle, and Marcus Gayle.

Although Gareth Southgate has shown readiness to rehabilitate Foden, Greenwood was obliged to wait longer but apparently fought his way back into battle after a hot streak of eight goals in 11 matches at the end of last season.
