Marcus Rashford sends threatening warning to Manchester United teammate Jadon Sancho

Marcus Rashford returned from his absence in Sunday’s 6-3 loss to Manchester City with two goals and an assist in Thursday’s 3-2 Europa League win over Omonia Nicosia.

He has played as a centre-forward under Erik ten Hag on several occasions, but has found the most success on the left wing.

On Thursday night, his Manchester United link-up play with fellow substitute Anthony Martial drew comparisons to the legendary duo Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole.

Only Rashford, who was returning from injury, will know if playing as the striker at the Etihad was the source of his problems.

When asked which position he prefers to play, he gave a diplomatic response but indicated where on the field he enjoys playing the most.

“The left side is probably more natural for me. I enjoy doing both, I’m just helping the team,” he said.

“If we have injuries and stuff like that, you never know what’s going to happen, you have to be at your best to play in whatever position is needed.”

It appears that £85 million signing Antony has secured the right wing position for himself, so Rashford’s comments may serve as a warning to Jadon Sancho.

After scoring spectacular goals against Liverpool, Leicester, and Sheriff, the forward has slid through his remaining seven appearances this season.

Sancho is a confident player, which he currently lacks.

The combinations of Martial and Rashford against Omonia, albeit against weaker opposition, make it difficult for Erik ten Hag to leave either out of the starting XI against Everton if both are fit.

Meanwhile, Sancho was substituted at halftime in Cyprus after another ineffective performance. As a result, his position on the team is in jeopardy.

United can take this as a positive because it demonstrates that Ten Hag has put together a team that is competitive in most positions.

Rashford’s five goals and three assists cannot be overlooked, and Sancho could be benched for his first Premier League game of the season.

The 22-year-old cannot afford to be inconsistent again this season, with others waiting in the wings – literally – to take his place, a beautiful quandary United hasn’t faced in a long time.
