Marcus Rashford reveals how Manchester United squad reacted to Wout Weghorst goal vs Real Betis
During Thursday night’s Europa League win over Real Betis, Wout Weghorst, who is on loan at Manchester United from Burnley for the remainder of the season, scored his first goal at Old Trafford.
This was the fourth goal of the game, which means that Manchester United will head into the second leg of their last-16 clash with Real Betis with a significant advantage.
Weghorst turned the ball home from close range after Claudio Bravo parried Scott McTominay’s shot into his path. Weghorst had only scored once before the game against Betis, so he was clearly elated and relieved to end his goal drought.
After Ayoze Perez’s first-half equalizer, the Reds upped the pressure in the second half, with earlier goals from Antony and Bruno Fernandes. Marcus Rashford acknowledged that Manchester United’s players were delighted for Weghorst.
Although both Rashford and Weghorst scored crucial goals, it was Weghorst’s goal that carried greater significance. Rashford, who had scored his 26th goal of the season to give United an early lead in the first half, felt that Weghorst’s goal was a moment that boosted team morale and generated positive energy within the team.
Asked if Weghorst’s goal meant a lot to the team, Rashford, speaking to BT Sport, said: “Yes, 100 per cent. He is a forward, he gets joy from scoring goals.
“As good as he works hard and does all the other stuff, he wants to score goals, so yes, everyone is really pleased for him.”
After suffering a humiliating 7-0 defeat against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, Manchester United’s response in the Europa League win was exactly what their manager, Erik ten Hag, was hoping for. However, Rashford emphasized that the team cannot afford to rest on their laurels and must continue to perform at the same level in upcoming matches, starting with their game against Southampton on Sunday.
“It is a step back in the right direction,” he added. “Obviously we have to build on this now to gain momentum again, but we can’t put too much emphasis on Sunday [vs Liverpool] – it’s gone and we can’t change it.
“We have to look forward now to the next games.”
