Marcel Sabitzer of Bayern Munich has joined Manchester United on a six-month loan deal, but will he improve Erik ten Hag’s squad? We have examined his statistics to determine this.

Casemiro and Christian Eriksen joined United last summer and have formed a formidable partnership in the middle of the field.

However, upon learning that Eriksen will be sidelined until the end of April due to an ankle injury, United acted swiftly and acquired Sabitzer on the transfer deadline.

“Manchester United expressed an interest in Marcel Sabitzer at the beginning of the week,” Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic told their official website.

“Marcel told us he would like more playing time and he’s confident he will get that at United. After consultation with our coach Julian Nagelsmann, we accepted the request and have loaned Marcel to Manchester United until 30 June. We wish him every success for the second half of the season with United.”

We compared Sabitzer’s league statistics from this season to those of Casemiro, Eriksen, Scott McTominay, Fred, and Bruno Fernandes using Whoscored statistics.

Note: Donny van de Beek has not been included due to his lack of Premier League minutes in 2022/23.

Goals and assists

Eriksen ranks first among the six midfielders in terms of direct goal contributions. In the Premier League, he has recorded one goal and seven assists at a rate of one every 187.3 minutes.

Fernandes has contributed directly to eight goals this season (four goals and four assists), averaging one every 213.7 minutes.

Casemiro, despite being a defensive midfielder, has contributed two goals and three assists in the Premier League. During his first season in England, the former Real Madrid star has averaged a direct goal contribution every 231.8 minutes.

This season, Fred has not recorded an assist, but he has scored in home victories against Tottenham and Nottingham Forest, bringing his minutes-per-goal involvement ratio to 287 minutes.

Sabitzer has recorded one goal and one assist for Bayern in the Bundesliga, contributing to a goal every 313.5 minutes on average.

McTominay has scored in both the League Cup and Europa League this season, but he has yet to record a goal or assist in 749 minutes of Premier League action.

Shots, dribbles, and retaining possession

Fred has been given more freedom to attack by Ten Hag and is currently averaging 2.4 shots per 90 minutes during the 2022/23 season.

Sabitzer is close behind with 2.2 shots per 90 minutes, while Fernandes, the group’s leading scorer, has averaged 2.1 shots per 90 minutes in the Premier League.

Eriksen was an attacking midfielder for Tottenham and Inter Milan, but he has been utilized in a deeper position for United this season, averaging 1.4 shots per ninety minutes.

Casemiro averages 1.3 shots per 90 minutes, and McTominay averages 0.8 shots per 90 minutes, placing them at the bottom of this list.

However, McTominay is the best dribbler, completing 1.0 successful dribbles per 90 minutes with a 58.8% success rate. Fred is close behind with 0.6 successful dribbles per 90 minutes at a 40% success rate.

Fernandes averages 0.5 successful dribbles per 90 minutes at a success rate of 33.3%, while Casemiro averages 0.3 per 90 minutes at a slightly better success rate of 37.4%.

Sabitzer and Eriksen both average 0.1 successful dribbles per 90 minutes, but the Austrian international has a 25% success rate while Eriksen has a 20% success rate.

Only 0.4 times per ninety minutes in the Bundesliga is United’s newest recruit dispossessed.

Eriksen and Casemiro are both dispossessed 0.80 times per 90 minutes in the league, while McTominay and Fred are dispossessed 1.10 times per 90 minutes. In the 2022-23 season, Fernandes was dispossessed 1.3 times per 90 minutes.


This season, Sabitzer has completed 65.2 passes per 90 minutes, which is more than Casemiro (62.5), Eriksen (57.8), Fred (56), Fernandes (47.2), and McTominay (31.6).

The Austrian international also ranks first in passing accuracy, with an 87.7% pass rate. Fred (82.9%), Eriksen (82.7%), McTominay (81.7%), Casemiro (78.6%), and Fernandes (78.6%) follow him.

In 2022/23, Fernandes averaged 2.6 key passes per 90 minutes in the Premier League, making him the most creative midfielder among the six.

Fred currently makes 2.2 key passes per 90 minutes, surpassing Eriksen (1.5), Casemiro (1.2), Sabitzer (0.9), and McTominay (0.8). (0.4).

Fernandes also completes 0.5 through balls per league game in 2022/23, which is more than Eriksen (0.2), Casemiro (0.2), McTominay (0.1), Fred (0.1), and Sabitzer (0.0).

Defensive contributions

This season, Sabitzer has averaged 3.9 successful tackles per 90 minutes. He is also willing to perform defensive work in the center of the field.

This places him just behind Casemiro (4.2), but above Fred (2.7), McTominay (2.3), Fernandes (2.3), and Eriksen (2.3). (0.7).

McTominay leads the pack in terms of clearances per 90 minutes. His total of 4.1 surpasses those of Casemiro (2.7), Sabitzer (1.3), Fernandes (1.1), Eriksen (1.1), and Fred (0.5).

The Scotland international also leads Casemiro (2.3), Sabitzer (1.1), Fernandes (0.6), Fred (0.6), and Eriksen (0.6) with 2.4 aerial duels won per ninety minutes (0.4).

Fred leads the team in interceptions with 1.7 per 90 minutes. Casemiro is second with 1.6, then Sabitzer (1.4), McTominay (1.1), Fernandes (0.7), and Eriksen (0.7). (0.5).

Casemiro wins many free-kicks for United and ranks first in fouls drawn (1.3 per 90 minutes). This surpasses Fernades (1.2), Fred (0.8), McTominay (0.6), Eriksen (0.4), and Sabitzer (0.1).
